In the UK, the waste that you can have collected from your home and taken for recycling varies from council to council. Norwich City Council have been among the best in the country for doorstep recycling collection – and they are about to get better. Let’s take a look at what they already recycle, what they will soon be recycling and why it’s so important.
Recycling Collection in Norwich
Every household in Norwich is provided with four free bins. A black bin for general domestic waste; two sealable caddies for food waste and kitchen scraps (a small caddy for the kitchen counter whose contents when full can be transferred to the larger kerbside caddy) and a blue bin for recycling waste. The black and blue bins are collected fortnightly. The food waste caddy is collected weekly. The list of items that can be collected to be recycled is already impressive:
- Aerosols
- Aluminium foil
- Cans and tins (aluminium or steel)
- Cardboard (including drinks cartons)
- Glass
- Paper
- Plastic bottles
- Plastic tubs
Improvements to the Service
From December, Norwich City Council aim to expand the range of items for which they offer kerbside collection. In addition to the above, they will offer a weekly collection of:
- Textiles
- Batteries
- Small electrical items
These Items should be left in a carrier bag beside the Norwich citizen’s refuse or recycling bin.
Why It’s Important
By making recycling as easy as possible, Norwich City Council are doing their bit to improve the environment. Less waste going into landfill is a desirable end in itself, but recycling is actually cheaper than disposal and some of the recyclable waste even has a value – metals and plastics can be bought by companies that reuse materials.
At Coda Plastics Ltd, we don’t see plastic as waste; we see it as a valuable resource. We recycle our own waste and we take in waste from other companies and form it into new products. Plastic can be used over and over again. As an environmentally responsible company, we see it as our duty to future generations to ensure that our waste is managed responsibly.
